UIC's UPPSA hosts Gary, IN Volunteer Day, August 13, 2011. UPPSA welcomes students, their families and friends to join us in Gary, Indiana for a day of community service and relaxation. Gary volunteer day is the kickoff event to UPPSA providing more volunteer opportunities across our Chicagoland area.

2011 APA-IL State Conference, Oct. 5-7, Hilton Orrington/Evanston, Evanston, IL. 10 mobile workshops, over 30 sessions, obtain a year's worth of CM credits and celebrate National Planning Month all in one place! New for 2011: a special 1-day track for planning officials and a two-tiered system of sessions at an introductory and advanced level.

Welcome new board members Robert Zimmerer, AICP and Kim Porter. Kim is APA-IL's new Diversity Committee Chair. Robert has been appointed as our new treasurer. We bid a fond farewell and a BIG thanks to our past treasurer Ben Carlisle, AICP. We wish you the best in your new endeavors Ben!

In case you missed it in the July 5 issue of Interact, all APA members have access to the Journal of the American Planning Association for free this month.
LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES - Sharon Caddigan, AICP 

The fall veto session will begin October 25, 2011. 
Two bills we were monitoring, that were still alive at end of the last session, included:

HB1056 – Zoning Decisions – Establishes procedural rules when zoning decisions are under judicial review because of actions taken by affected parties. This is in Committee.
HB1091 – Public-Private Partnerships for Transportation – Allows IDOT and ISTHA to enter into public-private partnerships for the development, financing, and operation of transportation projects through public-private agreements. This is in 2nd Reading.
Two additional bills, which surfaced over the year focused on economic development opportunities for municipalities, including:

SB540 – TIF Administrators – This bill, introduced in the Senate, was heavily amended in the House to make a multitude of significant changes to Illinois' TIF statute, including required certification of TIF Administrators, publication of TIF finances, payments to other units of government and developers, etc. The amendments passed the House, but the Senate Local Government Committee did not vote to concur with the amendments. Consequently, the Senate did not take action on the matter before the Legislative Session adjourned on May 31, 2011. This may, however, come back in some form either in the fall veto session, or next January.
HB1730 – Economic Development – This fairly broad bill allows corporate authorities to appropriate and expend funds for economic development purposes.

The US Green Building Council Illinois Chapter and the John Marshall Law School are now  CM providers! Be on the lookout for new opportunities to earn CM!

Fall AICP Exam Application Deadline has been extended to July 19!

Fall AICP exam testing window: November 7-21, 2011. If you would like to apply for an exam scholarship, please email pdo at ilapa.org for more information. 
Results from the May AICP Exam: for Illinois there were 22 test takers, 17 passed (77% pass rate). National reports 562 test takers, 382 passed (67.9% pass rate).

The ISS is currently looking for a Region 4 Coordinator (western-central Illinois, covering Adams, Pike, Brown, Schuyler, Scott, Morgan, Cass, Menard, Sangamon, Logan, De Witt, and Macon counties). The ISS appoints a Regional Coordinator from each IL region to help disseminate information to local planners, commissioners and others about the work of the Illinois Chapter and ISS.
