SAVE THE DATE: 2011 APA-IL State Conference,
Oct. 5-7, Hilton Orrington/Evanston, Evanston, IL
LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES - Sharon Caddigan, AICP
Reviewed list of bills entered into the General Assembly relevant to planning and development, including:
HB1056 – Zoning Decisions – Establishes procedural rules when zoning decisions are under judicial review because of actions taken by affected parties. This is in Committee.
HB1091 – Public-Private Partnerships for Transportation – Allows IDOT and ISTHA to enter into public-private partnerships for the development, financing, and operation of transportation projects through public-private agreements. This is in 2nd Reading.
HB1869 – Website Publication of Notice – Provides that publishing required notices on a municipality’s website can meet the guidelines of proper notice. This is in Committee.
SB37 – Posting Documents on Website – Establishes requirements for posting certain documents (budgets, ordinances, etc.) on-line including historic documentation. This is in Committee.

FREE APA-IL AICP Exam Study Session, March 18, 9am-4pm @ CMAP Offices. Led by PlanningPrep creators Trevor Dick, AICP, LEED-AP, Devin Lavigne, AICP, LEED-AP, and John Houseal, AICP.
ILLINOIS STATE SECTION – Phil Dick, AICP, ISS Director
The 2011 APA ISS Spring Conference will be in Quincy on March 24 and 25 with Sandy Trusewych as the conference chair. The conference is hosted by the Two Rivers Regional Council of Public Officials and will focus on environmental issues including those related to the Mississippi River. Alan Mallach, Director of the National Housing Institute and author of “Bringing Buildings Back,” will be the keynote speaker. For more information on the conference, visit ilapa.org.
2011 Citizen Planner Workshops, held by the Illinois State Section, are proposed for the following locations (coordinators are noted):
1. Rochelle/Rockford area (Region 1); Wayne Dust, AICP and Chris Limas, AICP
2. Peoria/Tri County area (Region 2); Jon Oliphant, AICP and Nick Hayward
3. Champaign/Urbana area (Region 3); Lorrie Pearson, AICP

CHICAGO METRO SECTION – Vijay Gadde, AICP, CMS President
March 25th CMS Event: Recent Federal Legislation Supporting Local Planning - A panel presentation on what’s going on in Washington D.C. New legislation, such as the Livable Communities Act, offers new opportunities to apply current planning principles with backing from Washington. More importantly, three federal departments, HUD, EPA and US DOT have now chosen to work collaboratively on urban issues including grants to states and local levels. January CMS/Mentoring Event - (RE)CONNECT THIS JANUARY! The CMS organized a networking and mentorship event on Jan. 27th at Jack’s Tap. The focus was bringing together planners from every stage of planning careers. The CMS had record 73 planners participate in this event, 40+ were students/recent graduates. Thanks to Bob Zimmerer, AICP and Michael Mays, AICP of the Mentoring Committee for making this event a success!

Four 2010 Award recipients have been presented with their awards. These communities include Tinley Park (presented by Rob Kowalski, AICP, Montgomery (presented by PR committee members Sara Kopinski and Alison Giangrasse), Villa Park (presented by Karen Stonehouse, AICP), and Carbondale (presented by Rob Kowalski, AICP).

The ISS is currently looking for a Region 4 Coordinator (western-central Illinois, covering Adams, Pike, Brown, Schuyler, Scott, Morgan, Cass, Menard, Sangamon, Logan, De Witt, and Macon counties). The ISS appoints a Regional Coordinator from each IL region to help disseminate information to local planners, commissioners and others about the work of the Illinois Chapter and ISS. Contact Phil Dick, AICP, ISS Director for details.
