Evanston = Huge Success!
Thank you to all attendees, exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers! The 2011 Conference was wildly successful (wild = BoURBAN Sprawl). The survey results are in and attendees all agree - Evanston was the place to be. Whether you were able to take part in all 3 days of activity, or stop in when you had a chance, we had over 550 very pleased attendees! Thank you to our co-chairs, Courtney Kashima, AICP and Barbara Cates - a job well done! Photos of the event will be available on the 2011 Conference website.

If you missed the 2011 Conference in Evanston be sure to attend the 2012 APA-IL State Conference at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign, September 19-21, 2012. Interested in volunteering? Contact the Chapter Administrator, John H. Paige, AICP at admin at ilapa.org.

2012 APA-IL State Conference, Sept. 19-21, 2012; Hilton Garden Inn, Champaign

DIVERSITY COMMITTEE - Kimberley Porter, AICP, Chair

The Diversity Committee has begun to meet to discuss goals for this new committee. The next Committee meeting is scheduled for Nov. 12, 2011 at 9:30am at the Starbucks on 35th/State across from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES - Sharon Caddigan, AICP, Chair

APA-IL's Legislative Committee continued to participate in CMAP’s legislative group. Topics discussed were regarding the veto session, and what may be up for spring session, including CNT-sponsored bill on water pricing; local government consolidations; possible local sourcing for Metra capital projects; and the smart grid bill, if it doesn’t pass through veto session. Next meeting is in early-Dec.
The fall veto session began Oct. 25, 2011. Relevant Planning Bills up for veto session include:

SB1652 – Utilities – This is the ‘smart grid bill,’ which the Governor vetoed in September, which allowed ComEd to increase rates for improvements to its system.
HB3372 – County Storm water – Establishes fee schedules when county has an approved storm water management plan. Passed the House on 4/13; up for Senate on 10/25
Focus of the veto session will be on Gaming expansion, to allow five additional licenses, and slot machines at racetracks, which the Governor opposes. Additionally, Speaker Madigan has introduced two bills (HB3832 and HB3847), which would divert roughly 20% of Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax (CPPRT) revenue from municipalities in order restore salaries and services of school superintendents. This diverts monies intended for local municipalities to meet a state financial obligation.
PLANNING OFFICIALS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE - Michael Blue, FAICP, Chair

Five planning officials workshops have been completed. The remaining are: Bloomington November 18; Glenview and Lake Zurich – Pending.
We are proud to announce our "Train the Trainer" sessions have produced new faculty members including: Chuck Bevelheimer, AICP, Randy Derifield, AICP, Bruce Knight, FAICP, and Libby Tyler, FAICP.
The Plan Commissioner track at the 2011 Conference served approximately 30 planners. Because of the success in 2011, this track is being considered for the 2012 Conference in Champaign.
Our 2012 budget and marketing/outreach program is currently being drafted.
CHICAGO METRO SECTION - Vijay Gadde, AICP, President

Approximately 44 planners attended the Sept. CMS program on ‘Delivering better plans and recommendations….’ Three graphics experts covered utilization of multiple mediums to convey clear and concise messages.
The CMS held its annual program committee meeting on Oct. 14th at CMAP. Twenty six volunteers participated in this event and came up with ideas for one social networking event and eight programs for 2012. The 2012 CMS calendar will be finalized in late December.
Congratulations to Sara Kopinski, the new CMS Secretary! The CMS Board reviewed all e-mails received from volunteers interested in serving as the next CMS Secretary. Sara Kopinski was selected as the next CMS Secretary during the October 14th board meeting. Sara is a graduate of UIUC and has been an active participant of the APA-Public Relations Committee. Sara also helped organize the 2011 APA-IL State Conference. Sara can be reached at cms at ilapa.org.
ILLINOIS STATE SECTION – Phil Dick, AICP, ISS Director

Citizen Planner Workshops successfully took place in Champaign on September 14th, led by Michael Blue, FAICP and Laurie Marston, AICP, and in East Peoria on October 13th, led by Libby Tyler, FAICP and Bruce Knight, FAICP; the three remaining scheduled workshops are ready to go and plans are moving forward on a workshop in Carbondale.
Planning continues for the 2012 APA ISS Spring Conference at the Conference Center in Decatur on March 22-23, 2012 and is coordinated by Stephanie Ashe Brown, AICP. Ethics and law sessions will be provided; a planning officials track is being considered. If you have any suggestions on speakers or topics, please email Stephanie.
