2012 APA-IL State Conference
Interested in the issues that are shaping urban planning in Illinois? Want to see how others are solving planning challenges? Then join us September 19-21, 2012 in Champaign-Urbana, IL for the 2012 APA-IL State Conference.
An Evening in Downtown Champaign
On Thursday, September 20th, explore the numerous restaurants and pubs in downtown Champaign with your fellow planners. We’ll gather in the hotel to organize our groups, then take the shuttle downtown. You’ll get two tickets for a designated item at a choice of more than 10 participating venues. Martinis at Boltini, pizza at Jupiters, local brews at Destihl and the Blind Pig, out of the ordinary tater tots and local delights at Big Grove Tavern, and much, much more. Gather your group and head downtown with us! (Shuttles will run from the downtown to the hotel throughout the night.) Click here for more information.
Join us on Wednesday for our Small Table Lunch
An on-site lunch featuring small table discussion topics, including transportation and mobility; historic preservation; smart growth and sustainability; downtown redevelopment; Illinois issues; local food and urban agriculture; wind power and alternative energy; and technology in planning. Enjoy some fellowship and get to know what others are thinking and doing about these issues. A box lunch with sandwich, fruit, chips and a drink will be provided for $11, with your choice of turkey, ham or vegetarian options. Please visit the registration website today to register for this lunch.

2012 APA-IL Award Winners
The results are in! The winners of the 2012 APA-IL Awards Program are listed below. This year we received 39 nominations – a wonderful demonstration of the high-quality planning work being done around Illinois. This year, we once again entered into an arrangement with the Missouri Chapter of American Planning Association (APA-MO) to “swap” the jurying of the awards. This process was mutually beneficial and allowed all communities to participate since no juror’s community would be conflicted out of competition. Thank you to all volunteer jury members and APA-MO.
Winners will be presented with an award at the Annual Awards Luncheon held during the APA IL Annual Conference in Urbana-Champaign, IL on Thursday, September 20th, 2012.

Legislative Update
Relevant bills the APA-IL Legislative Committee has been watching include: HB4687 – Open Meetings: This bill as presented, was not supported, since it would require local governments to make public meeting agendas ‘sufficiently descriptive’ without defining or addressing what that meant. Changes to the Bill in the Judiciary Committee modified the language to require agendas to note items subject to final action. Signed by the Governor as PA97-0827.
Illinois State Section Update
The APA-IL ISS Board approved a $50 mileage reimbursement for APA-IL ISS members traveling over 75 miles to attend the entire 2012 Illinois Chapter Conference in Champaign. Please contact Chris Mathias, AICP at cmathias at moline.il.us for details.
