Call for Local Sessions Presentations
Submission Deadline August 3, 2012
As part of the APA National Planning Conference to be held April 13-17, 2013 in Chicago, the Local Sessions Committee has the opportunity to present eight sessions highlighting planning and development in the Chicago region. You are invited to help us by sharing your expertise, perspective, and experience by answering this Call for Presentations.
Program Objective
The goal of the Local Sessions Committee is to highlight the planning lessons of the Chicago region and to share them with planners from across the country.
Program Focus
Presentation proposals should focus on plans, programs, projects, applications and approaches that:
· Highlight the diverse scales at which planning operates effectively: places, neighborhoods, communities and regions
· Accommodate a range of perspectives, or constituencies, or that seek to establish broad consensus
· Focus on successful implementation of fundamental planning techniques
· Help communities become more livable places
· Highlight issues that help planners to succeed in the current economic climate
· Emphasize planners’ perspectives on sustainable development and/or stewardship of land, water, air, flora and fauna
· Provide data and/or technology resources to a wider community
· Demonstrate best practices and innovative approaches in community planning
· Focus on innovative approaches to active modes of transportation
Submittal Procedure and Requirements
· Applications must be submitted through APA’s website at http://www.planning.org/conference/index.htm.Applications will be reviewed by the 2013 Local Sessions Committee and selected based on the criteria outlined in this request. Session proposals not selected for the Local Sessions Program will be submitted to APA to be considered as general session proposals.
· In reviewing session proposals the Local Sessions Committee may suggest that session ideas be amended, combined or augmented to meet program objectives and focus.
· Applicants are asked to incorporate multiple communities, projects, or approaches in order to maximize the perspectives of the Chicago region.
· Applicants are asked to provide a presentation that goes beyond the basics to tell a deeper story regarding the challenges of the plan, project or program and how they were overcome.
· In addition session proposals will be evaluated based on:
o Overall quality and focus
o Practical application of material and transferability to other communities
o Contemporary perspective
o Relevance to the planning profession
