APA PTS Workshop: Urban

President's Greeting
This newsblast follows a very busy time for the Illinois Chapter.
As you know, another successful Chapter Conference was held in
September in Champaign, IL. Over 300 attendees and speakers enjoyed
three tracks of conference sessions, mobile workshops, keynote
speeches and great networking events. A big thank you to TJ Blakeman,
AICP from the City of Champaign and Libby Tyler, FAICP from the City
of Urbana for co-chairing the conference and making it a success.
Shortly after the conference, the APA National Leadership meetings
were held in Washington DC. The Chapter was represented in these
meetings which help shape the mission of the National APA and also
offer the opportunity to learn about federal policy and planning
initiatives.
It’s also time for a changing of the guard. On
January 1st Courtney Kashima, AICP will be assuming the duties of
President for the Chapter. Others will take new roles on the Board
as well (see below). I know they will do a great job. Thank you very
much for the opportunity to be your President for the past two
years. It was a great experience and I believe the Chapter continues
to move forward.
Finally, many Chapter members are hard at work
preparing to host over 5,000 planners at the 2013 APA National Conference
which will be held in April in Chicago. The Local Host Committee has
put together a fantastic menu of mobile workshops, exhibits,
sessions and social events that will truly “show off” the City and
region. Check out
APA’s conference blog to keep up on these events. Have a great holiday season!
-- Rob Kowalski, AICP President

2013 APA National Conference Update
Chicago • April 13-17, 2013
Hyatt Regency Chicago 151 East Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL
The APA-IL Local Host Committee has been hard at work to make the
2013 National Conference one to remember. Here's the latest updates:
We are happy to announce that the Opening Reception will be held at
the
Chicago History Museum.
Network and relax during this 3 hour event in the heart of Old Town.
Attendees will be given exclusive access to the museum.
The keynote speaker will be
Xavier de Souze Briggs. Mr. Briggs
is known for his work on social capital, civic capacity, and
community building, and concept of the "geography of opportunity."
In January 2009, Briggs was appointed by President Barack Obama to
become Associate Director of the White House Office of Management
and Budget. Briggs helped develop the now widely emulated
"quality-of-life" planning approach to neighborhood revitalization,
and his work with the Comprehensive Community Revitalization Program
in the South Bronx won the first President's Award of the American
Planning Association.
The preliminary program for the 2013 National Conference will be out
soon and registration will begin in mid-December. Many of the
events, sessions and workshops will have limited registration.
Register early to insure your spot!
Making big plans for the 2013 CMS & ISS Conferences
While our Local Host Committee is planning for the 2013 APA National
Conference, the APA-IL Board is looking ahead to 2014. There will be
no state-wide conference in 2013. Instead, APA-IL’s
Chicago Metro
Section (CMS) and the
Illinois State Section
(ISS) will hold augmented
Conferences in their
respective territories. The APA-IL board decide
to do this for a few reasons: the huge Chapter commitment
invested in the 2013 National Conference, the need to serve members
that will not be attending the 2013 National Conference and provide
a low cost, local alternative, and results from a Chapter wide
survey.
The Chicago Metro Section will have a day long workshop in
the Chicago area. That evening the APA-IL Chapter will host an
Awards Reception, honoring those that win APA-IL Awards in 2013. The
date for this event has not been set but has been tentatively
planned for October 2013.
The Illinois State Section will have a two-day conference in
Columbia, IL. This event will also take place in October 2013.
Stay tuned
for more details.

APA PTS Workshop: Urban Design for Planners
• November 14, 2012 (CM|7.0)
Planners know the value of good urban design. But knowing is one
thing. Showing is another — and that takes a specialized set of
skills. No budget to hire graphics consultants for your design
proposals? Turn your ideas into images with
this hands-on Planners Training Service workshop.
Popular presenter Emily Talen, FAICP, reviews urban design
principles like connectivity, proximity, and mix. Then she shows how
tools like GIS, Sketchup, and graphic design software can make those
principles jump off the page. You'll learn to
create more persuasive proposals that help your community visualize
the changes ahead.
All attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop computer. Download
free graphics software and work in these programs as part of the
workshop. Registrants will receive full instructions on how to
install all of the software ahead of time. Several videos will also
be made available
This workshop is co-sponsored by APA's Illinois Chapter.
