APA-APA-IL ISS 2013 Fall Conference
The Main Event
"Keeping your Main Street in the Spotlight"
September 25-27, 2013
The Falls Reception & Conference Center
300 Admiral Weinel Blvd. Columbia, IL 62236
REGISTRATION
PROGRAM
Since the earliest days of the nation, American Main Streets have been the
center stage for community life, portraying what is best and most attractive
about each city or village. This conference will explore ways that many Illinois
communities are returning Main Street to center stage with the assistance of
professional planners (and some talented amateurs) as directors. This
conference features sessions in two general categories: Main Street and Best
Practices. Here's a sampling of what we have planned:
Keynote Speakers
Friday Breakfast Speaker Becky McCray: Liquor store owner and cattle rancher is
not the job description for an APA conference speaker, is it? McCray co-founded
Tourism Currents in 2009 to bring social media skills to tourism, to help people
put their town on the map. (CM | 1)
Friday Lunch Keynote Speaker Stephen B. Friedman: Economic Development in the
Old and New Economies
This presentation will share “A Tale of Two Economies” and examine approaches to
economic development in a changing environment. Mr. Friedman and Mr. Baker will
discuss success stories as well as lessons learned from the opportunities that
got away. (CM | 1)
Receptions
Thursday Reception at the Historic Monroe County Welcome Center (formerly
Shoemaker School) The Monroe County Welcome Center is a multi-purpose facility that combines a
commemorative plaza, tourist information center and museum in a renovated
1867-vintage one room school. Learn about this unique facility’s interesting
past, present and future as you enjoy refreshments and music.
Friday Mobile Workshop: Rock City Tour. Rock City has today become southern Illinois’ ultimate recycling project.
Shuttered since the 1980s, the limestone caves found in the bluffs near Valmeyer
are now being transformed into a temperature and humidity controlled business
complex with approximately six million square feet of space for tenants like the
National Archives and supermarket cold storage distribution. (CM | 1)
