   Elevating APA-IL in 2014!
Greetings from the Chapter President

The Chapter started a very busy year by hosting the 2013 APA
National Planning Conference in April. It was a successful event,
made so by the generosity of our sponsors and
volunteers -- thank you! I also want to thank the leadership
of the Illinois State Section and Chicago Metro Section for their
fabulous fall conference events. Both events offered great
            programming and were well attended.

As a Board, we are never content to rest with the status quo! In
2013 we reinvigorated three of our committees (Legislative, Pro Bono, and
Public Relations) and our Young Planners Group. Our Plan
Commissioner Training has expanded to more than 30 municipalities.
The Chapter Board will continue to elevate our work in 2014. For example, we
will be introducing a new book club
that will offer CM credits. Our
regular state conference will resume in Evanston on
Oct. 1-3, 2014 followed by a return to
            Normal,
Sept. 23-25, 2015. Watch for these exciting initiatives in
            the coming year!

We welcome your thoughts on how we can elevate our work in 2014 and
            your ideas on what the
Chapter should pursue. Please feel free to
contact me at president at ilapa.org.

-- Courtney Kashima, AICP
    APA-IL President

News from the Chicago Metro Section

Following the success of the APA 2013 National Conference in Chicago
back in April, the APA-IL CMS returned to Chicago to host a one-day
Fall Conference on October 4th at the DePaul Center. The conference
kicked off with opening remarks from Courtney Kashima, AICP, APA-IL
President, and a keynote speech from Brian Imus, the newly appointed
Executive Director of the U.S. Green Building Council - Illinois
Chapter. Throughout the day, attendees were able to expand their
planning toolboxes and knowledge bases with sessions covering
planning data, zoning, land use and transportation, housing, law,
ethics, urban infill, and economic development. Sessions
ended in the late afternoon and the evening continued with the APA-IL
Awards Reception, honoring local recipients of the Annual
Chapter Awards. The Awards Reception was followed by an after-hours networking event with
award recipients, colleagues, and students at Elephant & Castle.
Much appreciation to all of the presenters, session organizers,
volunteers, Chaddick Institute staff, and APA-IL and APA-CMS board
            and committee members!

News from the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign's
Student Planning Organization

The Student Planning Organization (SPO) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has enjoyed a very active Fall 2013 semester. Offering a wide range of activities every other week, the SPO has seen a major increase in attendance. This growth is due to a strong advertising campaign and the decision by the SPO Board to include Minors of Urban and Regional Planning as automatic members. Social events have included: City of God screening,  tailgate party, bike tour, and a walking tour of Champaign’s Country Fair neighborhood. Professional development and educational events have included a resume/cover letter writing workshop and student presentations regarding summer internships/research. The SPO also participated in UIUC’s Parking Day, where students created a temporary green space in a large parking lot (picture at right).

This fall, the SPO Board set out on two major projects. First,
several Master students and community organizations have
collaborated to revitalize a bike sharing program based out of the
Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The second major fall
project is the creation of Planning Interest Committees and
providing networking opportunities within those committees (using
Google Drive). It is the SPO's goal for students to gather
informally and eventually collaborate to offer work products to the
community. There has been much praise amongst students regarding the
formation of these committees, and the SPO Board is excited to lead
students on this new, team-based initiative in 2014.
