CMS September Program: Placemaking:
Form-Based Codes and Community Revitalization
As communities work to improve their downtowns or other areas through placemaking, many find that existing zoning codes hinder growth that fits into the context of an already established community. This program will discuss how form-based coding (FBC) is used as a tool in placemaking to encourage sustainable, business-friendly development, while preserving and enhancing the character and economic vitality of established communities.
PRESENTERS:
Carol Wyant, Executive Director of the Form-Based Codes Institute
Jeff Brady, Director of Planning of the Village of Glenview
Mike De Rouin, President of FitzGerald Associates Architects
The presentation
will conclude with a frank analysis of the FBC’s successes and
challenges from the municipal and developer perspectives.
After the presentations, there will be roundtable discussions to
allow participants to share and compare experiences, best
practices, and new insights regarding placemaking strategies and
FBCs.

October is National Community Planning Month
We are coming quickly upon October, which is National Planning Month. "Each year APA, its members, chapters, divisions, and professional institute sponsor National Community Planning Month to raise the visibility of the important role of planners and planning in communities across the U.S.
Help elevate the role of planning in your community. Host a planning
department or planning commission open house, talk to kids in
schools about a career in planning, present a library display about
planning and planners, sponsor a neighborhood tour to highlight how
planning helps the community."
The American Planning Association's website has lots of great ideas. Think about what you can do to promote your profession. This is a great opportunity to celebrate and recognize the great things that we do each day to make our communities better places to live.
Please share your success stories with the Chapter. Let's get the word out!
