UC Davis Arboretum GATEways Project - Conceptual Design and Phase I
Implementation
University of California, Davis, California
Submittal Deadline:  April 30, 2007

A New Model for a University Garden and a New "Front Door" for UC Davis

We are pleased to invite design and planning firms to respond to the
enclosed Request for Qualifications for a major campus design project at
the University of California, Davis. The University and the UC Davis
Arboretum are seeking the services of a planning and/or design firm to
provide the cohesive aesthetic vision and conceptual design for the UC
Davis Arboretum GATEways Project (Gardens, Arts, and The Environment).
This firm will also provide the Phase I Implementation for the City Arts
GATEway, the first of three major GATEways on the UC Davis campus. The
GATEways Project is a transformative new model for a land-grant
university, creating an open, accessible campus that supports lifelong
learning for the community and enriches student learning with
opportunities for engagement, leadership, and public service.

The University has developed a framework plan for a major redesign of
the highly visible southern edge of campus as a visitor corridor,
integrating the two-mile long Arboretum with campus circulation, siting
for several major new building projects, and three major visitor entry
areas (GATEways), with an eye to creating an open, accessible campus
landscape.

The firm selected for this project will build on the existing framework
plan to create a unifying aesthetic vision and landscape design for the
entire south campus area. The design will incorporate unifying elements
that will run throughout the Arboretum, including:

*	Design treatment for the Arboretum waterway
*	Parking, pathways, and lighting
*	Visitor amenities: benches and seating areas, water fountains,
restrooms, shade structures, way-finding elements
*	Interpretive signage system
*	Orientation areas, outdoor classroom areas, performance spaces
*	Plan for incorporating public art

Additionally, the firm will create detailed garden designs for major
campus GATEways, with thematic elements reflecting the distinct
character of each GATEway.

To submit your firm's qualifications for consideration, please download
the Request For Qualifications for the project at our website:
