Notes from the Fellows Business Meeting

San Antonio

April 22, 2006

Terry Harrington, AICP, Commissioner and member of the College of Fellows Committee, facilitated the meeting.

Discussion on the Return of Fellows as Futurists session:

* It was an entertaining, thoughtful session but would be better to have had fewer panelists.

§ A classroom setup would be desirable for future sessions.

§ The room size should be larger.

§ A suggestion was to use a "goldfish bowl" presentation style to make it an interactive session akin to theater in the round.

§ Someone questioned that Fellows, as old guard, should be futurists.

§ Planning lessons of the past can be related to today's issues, e.g. the disappearance of zoning.

Discussion on future Fellows conference session:

§ Futurist subject has probably run its course as a conference topic. Look at the profession of planning.

§ A request for a longer block of time next time, with no more than 4 panelists.

§ Focus on a few ideas; not as broad.

§ Use this session to educate younger planners about planning failures e.g. "pedestrian malling of America."

§ Look at immigration and what it means to planning and community growth. Immigration not just as a border state issue, but farther reaching, too.

§ A future issue of the profession is the projected massive shortage of planners.

§ Counter comment made that growth of APA and AICP outpacing that of the general population, therefore why would there be a deficit of planners?

§ Desire to investigate projected shortage of/need for planners - check Linda Dalton's data on planners.

§ Younger planners going more into private sector. Financially, difficult to compete with the private sector which can't afford to hire top credentialed candidates.

§ Volunteers for next year's Fellows conference session (with focus on immigration and migration):

o Stanley Hoffman, FAICP [please confirm] - stan at stanleyrhoffman.com

o Emil Moncivais, FAICP - emoncivais at sanantonio.gov

o Paulette Carolin, FAICP - carolinp at rtcsnv.com

o Arlan Colton, FAICP - azplanner at cox.net <mailto:azplanner at cox.net>

[College of Fellows Committee note: Volunteers should contact each other.]

Other issues:

§ Desire for welcome package for new Fellows. [Please see attached letter]

§ How Fellows can relate to the APA Foundation. Paul Sedway will send out a notice on the Fellows list serve pertaining to Foundation contribution.

§ Foundation can be third leg of stool: APA, AICP. FAICP should not be in competition with AICP and should not duplicate APA and AICP efforts. [Staff/College of Fellows Committee note: FAICP is a part of AICP.]

§ Fellows can ask AICP for budget or dues (not favorable).

Fellows can play an active role in publicizing and nominating Planning Pioneers and Landmarks awards. [College of Fellows Committee note: Please volunteer for this activity.]

§ Feature stories of Fellows and send out to media monthly. Target schools and national coverage to encourage youth entry into the planning profession. National coverage of "best of the best." Fellows can write and edit articles. Volunteers for media task force:

o Mary Anne Bowie, FAICP - magbowie at aol.com

o Paulette Carolin, FAICP [please confirm] - carolinp at rtcsnv.com <mailto:carolinp at rtcsnv.com>

[College of Fellows Committee note: Volunteers should contact each other.]

§ Planning schools need assistance in recruiting students. Fellows can assist in this endeavor.

§ Fellows can assist with the Planning Assistance Teams program (www.planning.org/cap <http://www.planning.org/cap> ).

§ An opinion was expressed that the Fellows induction ceremony is lacking in substance. Recommendation: select an inductee or an existing Fellow to deliver a short (20 minute), provocative address.

§ Request for 50-word statements in handout at ceremony. Include current location and position in statement - for reference. [Staff/College of Fellows Committee note: The 50-word statements will be posted on the web.]

§ It would be nice to know the stories of why Fellows went into planning.
