suggests below - Planners and Politics.

Or perhaps FAICP could offer a session on the relationship between
leadership, ethics and courage. What are the characteristics of a
leader that is able to make an ethical decision that may be politically
unpopular and still survive and remain effective? How does a planner
know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em? I would argue that
developing good working relationships with elected officials while
establishing a reputation for being ethical can help shield planners
from political pressures to do something unethical. We also all know
that not every battle is worth fighting.
It would be great to have a Fellows website where we could provide
comments and advice on these types of issues on an ongoing - sort of a
FAQ with a dialogue. Paul Zucker has a great newsletter with this type
of format. It would be a different type of mentoring, but perhaps one
that could reach more folks.
Just some random thoughts, which I hope have not been overly influenced
by the record heat...

I'd be interested in a session on Ethics, if one is being put
together...

*Notes from Fellows meeting at APA National Conference in
Philadelphia, April 2007*
*Fellows Conference Session*
The Fellows discussed a future session topic. Topics that were
suggested:
* Issues of courage: leadership through difficult times
* Ethics and leadership
* Good planning, good politics
* Advice at the beginning of your career (that I wish I had)
* Students - Fellows connections
* Possibility of starting a Leadership track or getting leadership on
several tracks.
* Great people behind the great places Great Places in America
Volunteers to pull the Fellow session together: Connie Cooper, Polly
Carolin and Elaine Costello.
*Note:* All session proposals must be submitted online by August 28:

*FAICP Nominating Committee*
Mike McAnelly and Phil Clark volunteered to coordinate an FAICP
Nominating Committee.
*Fellows Induction Ceremony*
The Fellows discussed possible modifications to the induction
ceremony. Some thoughts expressed were that the San Antonio 2006
ceremony was too short and not honorary enough. Ideas that were
proposed included having the Selection Committee pick one member to
make a speech; lengthen the written program and include 50-word
statements; include personal data; web postings expanded; include
graphics/powerpoint highlighting career achievements; posters about
each new Fellow; let the event feel like the Academy Awards with
procession and music. There was some discussion about expanding the
memorial of deceased Fellows. Ideas about a potential speaker for the
ceremony: invite someone special, but not a new Fellow. Do not use
powerpoint.
*Recognition of Fellows*
Greater promotion of the College of Fellows and the induction ceremony
(e.g. Planning magazine, Fellows ribbons at conference). A special
Fellows table at the awards luncheon.
*Fellows giving back*
Examples of best practices from Fellows. Fellows taking responsibility
for university outreach, mentoring, ethics education, role in and
contribution to the Planning Foundation. At the local level: Planner
in residence at university for a few days; lobbying (e.g. OR).
