My how the time has flown since the Fellows meeting at the Philadelphia APA National Conference when I offered, along with Connie Cooper and Polly Carolin, to help pull together an FAICP session for the 2008 conference. I do not have Connie or Polly's contact information, so I am hoping to reconnect with them through this email. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Given the short time before the proposal is due, I suggest that we organize a session on Leadership using the session format that the California Planning Roundtable (CPR) has used at the California Chapter conference for the past few years. These are interactive sessions designed to help planners develop and refine their leadership skills. A panel of planners in different public and private sector roles initiates the discussion and offer conclusions at the end. Most of the session is devoted to an exchange among the panel and participants. Each year, we pick a different aspect of leadership. For the 2007 CCAPA, our topic is "Developing Leadership in Young Planners".
If we want an FAICP session at the 2008 APA conference, I am willing to work with other volunteers to put together the proposal (what aspect of leadership should we focus on, who should be on the panel etc.) and the session. So, please get back to me in the next few days ( by Weds August 22,2007) if you want to volunteer to help put together this FAICP session. As I recall, the proposals need to be submitted by August 28th.
Thanks

Notes from Fellows meeting at APA National Conference in Philadelphia, April 2007
Fellows Conference Session
The Fellows discussed a future session topic. Topics that were suggested:
* Issues of courage: leadership through difficult times
* Ethics and leadership
* Good planning, good politics
* Advice at the beginning of your career (that I wish I had)
* Students - Fellows connections
* Possibility of starting a Leadership track or getting leadership on several tracks.
* Great people behind the great places Great Places in America
Volunteers to pull the Fellow session together: Connie Cooper, Polly Carolin and Elaine Costello.
Note: All session proposals must be submitted online by August 28: <http://www.planning.org/2008conference/sessionproposal/generalsessions.htm> http://www.planning.org/2008conference/sessionproposal/generalsessions.htm
FAICP Nominating Committee
Mike McAnelly and Phil Clark volunteered to coordinate an FAICP Nominating Committee.
Fellows Induction Ceremony
The Fellows discussed possible modifications to the induction ceremony. Some thoughts expressed were that the San Antonio 2006 ceremony was too short and not honorary enough. Ideas that were proposed included having the Selection Committee pick one member to make a speech; lengthen the written program and include 50-word statements; include personal data; web postings expanded; include graphics/powerpoint highlighting career achievements; posters about each new Fellow; let the event feel like the Academy Awards with procession and music. There was some discussion about expanding the memorial of deceased Fellows. Ideas about a potential speaker for the ceremony: invite someone special, but not a new Fellow. Do not use powerpoint.
Recognition of Fellows
Greater promotion of the College of Fellows and the induction ceremony (e.g. Planning magazine, Fellows ribbons at conference). A special Fellows table at the awards luncheon.
Fellows giving back
Examples of best practices from Fellows. Fellows taking responsibility for university outreach, mentoring, ethics education, role in and contribution to the Planning Foundation. At the local level: Planner in residence at university for a few days; lobbying (e.g. OR).
